SILK RIBBON FAQ

WHAT IF THERE ISN'T ENOUGH OF THE COLOUR I NEED IN STOCK?

All of our silk ribbons are hand dyed in small batches. If you need more of a colour than what is available on our website, please contact us. The production lead time for out of stock items is up to 3 weeks for processing and shipping.

WHAT WIDTHS OF RIBBON ARE AVAILABLE?

Our ribbons are available in both a 1.9cm (3/4 inch) width and a 5cm (2 inch) width. As all of our ribbons are torn and frayed by hand there maybe some slight variation in the width of +/- 1-2mm. If you require an alternative width, contact us.

DO YOU OFFER WHOLESALE PRICING?

We do not currently offer wholesale pricing. As the hand dyeing process is a slow-crafted one, our pricing reflects this. We do offer an industry discount of 15% for registered Australian and New Zealand small businesses. For more information visit our VIP Botanical Society page

HOW MUCH RIBBON WILL I NEED FOR MY BOUQUETS?

For a longer drape from the waist to lower leg, we recommend using one roll of 2-3 colours in varying widths. For a shorter drape from the waist to above the knee, we recommend half a roll of 1-2 colours in varying widths.

HOW MUCH RIBBON WILL I NEED FOR MY INVITATION SUITES?

To comfortably wrap and tie a small bow around a standard 5x7"(12.5cm x 18cm) invitation you will need approximately 50-60cm of ribbon per invite. One roll will wrap approximately 5-6 invitations.

ARE THE COLOURS ON YOUR WEBSITE ACCURATE?

While care has been taken to photograph our ribbons in natural light, botanical dyes are essentially a “living” colour, morphing and adapting to various lighting situations. In addition all screens display colours slightly differently. For the most accurate colour matching please refer to our Pantone Colour Matching Guide

IS THERE ANY COLOUR VARIATION IN THE RIBBONS?

Due to the nature of the hand made, botanical dyeing process, there may be subtle nuances in the colour of your ribbon, resulting in a luminescent, one of a kind product. Colours may also vary slightly from batch to batch.

DO YOU USE ANY CHEMICALS TO DYE YOUR RIBBONS?

All of our ribbons are dyed with natural, botanical ingredients. Due to their fugitive nature, some natural dyes require the use of a mordant to fix the dye to the fabric, making it light & colourfast. We mostly dye with botanicals that are rich in tannins, and therefore do not require the addition of a mordant. For those that do require a mordant, we use minimal amounts of Aluminium sulphate, a chemical commonly used as a water purification agent. Aluminium sulphate occurs naturally in the form of leaves from the Symplocos tree. Aluminium based mordants are non toxic and safe for both ourselves and the environment.

HOW LONG ARE YOUR RIBBONS?

All of our ribbons are hand torn in one 3 metre continuous length.

DO YOU CUT YOUR RIBBONS ON THE BIAS?

No. All of our ribbons are seamless and are hand torn in one continuous length along the grain of the fabric. The bias cut technique is used largely by fashion designers to create a beautiful, soft drape in garments by cutting on a 45° angle to the fabric grain. Bias cut ribbon needs to be stitched together approximately every 1.5 metres. We prefer to produce our ribbons in one continuous length to suit a wide range of uses without an unsightly join. The Habotai silk we use achieves a soft drape without needing to be cut on the bias.

HOW DO I CARE FOR MY RIBBONS?

WASHING

Plant dyed silks are best cared for with limited washing. If needed, hand-wash separately in lukewarm water with a teeny drop of PH neutral dishwashing liquid, such as Ecostore. Rinse thoroughly and hang to dry in the shade. Store out of direct sunlight.

PRESSING

Each ribbon has been hand-pressed and rolled onto a wooden peg to prevent creasing. If any creasing does occur, quickly run your ribbon through a straightening iron on the lowest setting (less than 150°C). Alternatively use a cool iron.

IMPORTANT NOTE ON PH

Some natural dyes can be sensitive to changes in PH levels. Plant foods and other gardening chemicals can drastically change the acidity or alkalinity of water. Be sure to dry your stems thoroughly before wrapping your bouquet in silk ribbon. This will also prevent creasing as silk tends to crease much easier once wet.
